The research environment in this area is continually shifting as a result of the increasing interest in open educational resources.

What is the purpose of Research?

The main purposes of research is to inform action, gather evidence for theories, and contribute to developing knowledge in a field of study.

Educational Quote:

“The roots of education are better, but the fruit is sweet." ~ Aristotle

If we hope to see the impact of open education, it is essential for effective research to continue in OER.

Weekly Insights:

I learned more about OER research and whether to tell or not OER is making a difference. Without research there won't be any data to tell how OER is being implemented.

According to David Wiley (2020). There are three keys to having a holistic framework for evaluating the impact of education innovations.

  1. Student Success: "Success" means completing a course with a final grade that allows the course to count toward graduation.

  2. Scale: means "the proportion of students being reached"

  3. Savings: means "the amount of money spent on course materials by the average student using OER compared to the amount of money spent on course materials by the average control student."

Research says:

  • Platforms such as EdTech Books have helped save over $9M

  • Data doesn't show a decline in student performance with OER use

  • When OER is used, the average savings per student is $116.94

  • Less than 10$ of college use OER material
